“Getting in’s the easy part, trust me,” Ellie said as she led us down to Lord Gadric’s classroom. At his age, he didn’t burn the midnight oil like he used to, so no one was inside as she led us to the back and unlocked the workroom. She was often the only person working late in this space.

It was a squat, circular room set under the staircase leading down to this floor. A single magelight lent clean, white light to the space, and we could hear the muffled thump of the occasional person above us. To the left was an alchemy table with an assorted set of clear glassware. A silvery mixture sat at the bottom of a giant stoppered flask, but otherwise, the tools were clean and awaiting use.

“I see what you mean,” I whispered, aware that someone on the stairs may be able to hear our voices in here. Lord Gadric was apparently not much better than Ellie at keeping a space clean and free of clutter. The right side of the room was full of boxes and bins full of tools and reagents for both magic and alchemy.

“Some of this stuff has been around since before Lord Gadric. Most should be labeled, at least,” Ellie said. She slid the first box off the top of a tower of dented cardboard.

“Operation Box, all right,” Biggs said, following suit. “I didn’t believe he just had illusions lying around, but there’s gotta be a few in all this junk.”

“Aren’t there rules for storing magic?” I asked. It didn’t seem like it was getting followed here.

Ellie shrugged. “Lord Gadric would sense if anything was unstable or dangerous. He’s gone looking through all this before for one enchanted item.”

We worked and whispered, passing boxes back after a quick rummage. The ones closest to us appeared to be all reagents, things like herbs, spare wands, and tiny crystals that gleamed from the inside. “So, looks like we won’t find anything before lights out,” Pereyra said. “Did you have a plan for how to get back to our dorm too, Ellie?”

“Well, we can’t get caught carrying enchanted items we stole,” she said.

“Uh huh,” he muttered.

“Good thing I’ve been working late recently. I’ve figured out the sergeant assigned to our floor tends to take a nap after midnight.”

Biggs snorted in surprise. “Really?”

“You’ve been out that late?” I asked, my brows rising. I usually passed out as soon as it was lights out, so she really could sneak in at any time after that, and I wouldn’t know the difference.

She bobbed her head. “Yeah. My project is close to a breakthrough, I think. I’ve been trying to capture different light-creating compounds in glass. One of these days, it will work. Imagine a world where we don’t have to rely on torches and lanterns at night.”

“Unless you’re rich and already have magelights,” Biggs murmured.

“In this scenario, everyone will have these kind of magelights,” she said.

Pereyra cleared his throat. “That’s great and all, but let’s try to focus,” he sighed.
